Called the “dean of American landscape” by the New York Times, Ranger was the founder of the Lyme colony in 1899. The artist was also one of the leading American impressionists whose limited palette and atmospheric effects distinguished his work. The success of this ethereal seascape hinges on the energetic brushwork and the convergence of the regular rhythms of sky and sea. The scale is enhanced by the two boats positioned close to the horizon line.
