An astute recorder of the American scene, especially the urban environment, Gorsline studied at Yale University and the Art Students League in New York. Deeply influenced by Kenneth Hayes Miller and John Sloan, the artist preferred to record scenes from the world around him. This this instance, passengers waiting for the train on the subway platform interact as a result of chance: a man reads over the shoulder of a fashionable woman holding a newspaper, who leans against the station I-beam.
