Berchem’s compositions are often imaginary and idyllic Italianate landscapes filled with convincing naturalism and the interaction of humans and animals. The son of painter Pieter Claesz, Berchem started painted in Haarlem as a teenager, before entering the studio of Jan van Goyen, where he adopted the surname Berchem.
