This comes from what was likely a series of the twelve months published by Frederick de Wit in the mid-seventeenth century based on Potter’s designs and etched by Nolpe. The scene is an exercise in light and shadow and features a maid, who looks up from a large washing tub, while a group of domestic cattle rest. Artfully arranged farming implements occupy the foreground.
