The Three Trees stands out as one of Rembrandt's most accomplished landscape prints. Using an experimental approach to etching, the artist skillfully combined several techniques including drypoint (a steel needle directly on the metal plate), engraving, and a speckled tone, to create a dramatic impression of the quickly changing weather conditions. If you look closely, you can see an artist sketching on the hill at right, a fishing couple at lower left, and a pair of lovers among the foliage in the foreground.
