Renowned for his maritime scenes, Zeeman explored the subject when Holland’s trading and commercial interests spread around the globe. Indeed his name, Zeeman means “seaman or sailor” and likely indicates that he had intimate knowledge of ships and the sea that he depicted in some 177 prints and dozens of paintings.
