For a time, Wouwerman worked in the studio of renowned painter Frans Hals and his work shows the influence of the Haarlem master Pieter van Laer. An oil painting by his brother, Pieter, is also in the collection. The artist gained a reputation for painting elegant landscapes with travelers and horses, military encampments, and much sought after equestrian scenes.
