The print emphasizes the dramatic surprise of the innkeeper upon Christ’s disappearance at Emmaus, once the figures recognized his true identity as the resurrected Messiah. Luke 24:31 recounts the moment depicted in the etching: “And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.”
