An extraordinary animal portraitist, Potter created compositions where the creatures were the chief protagonists, not just background elements for human interaction. Potter was a pioneer in the painting of landscapes with animals. Farm scenes and small-scale paintings and etchings of animals became popular in Holland from the middle of the seventeenth century.
